Community Involvement

As members of such a wonderful local community we are proud sponsors of several great organizations. We have chosen the organizations in which we partner with based on the programs that the each organization offers and our customer and employee interests.

Shop Local Raleigh is a part of The Greater Raleigh Merchant Association (GRMA). It was created specifically as a community for small businesses in Raleigh to network and learn from each other. We joined Shop Local Raleigh soon after opening our store in 2012 and have been a Sponsoring Member since then. The GRMA holds several major annual events including the Raleigh Christmas Parade and Brewgaloo and Shop Local Raleigh members are always invited to participate. Shop Local Raleigh provides great service to both it’s members and the community by getting the word out about how locally-owned businesses positively impact our economy.

We began our relationship with The Green Chair Project just a couple of months after we opened our store in 2012. We made a decision that we would run a program in which we would donate a mattress set to a charity for every mattress that we sold in November and December. It was a great idea but it was difficult to find an organization that could accept the mattress sets, store them and distribute them as needed. After making many calls to area organizations we were about to give up on this idea when we put in touch with The Green Chair Project through Shop Local Raleigh. The Green Chair Project works different organizations but it is through their Ella’s Sweeter Dreams program that they distribute mattress sets to children who are referred to them through Social Service agencies. There are children who have never had a bed to sleep on and through this program children get a real bed for the first time in their lives. We make a monthly donation of mattress sets to this program and we sell mattress sets at cost to the program so that it can continue to grow every year.

Note in the Pocket is another local organization that assists school-aged children and their families by providing clothing and shoes so they can attend school with dignity. They accept all clothing from donations made by community members. The clothing goes through a rigorous sorting and sizing process and packages are prepared for individuals based on requests made by school social workers. The organization is made up of hundreds of volunteer workers and they continue to grow month after month. We are a drop off location for clothing donations. We take in donations, provide tax receipts and deliver the donated clothing to the facility as we receive them. We have also worked with groups to organize clothing drives and penny drives to purchase new undergarments.

In 2014 we made a cash donation to the American Cancer Society to be dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness. Coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness month we announced that we would donate $100 for every mattress that we sold over a long weekend. We had a successful weekend, made the donation in early December and received a very nice letter from the American Cancer Society just a couple of weeks later.

The Tarheel Swimming Association (TSA) is a local summer youth swim league that provides opportunities for children aged 4 through 18 opportunities to participate in recreational swimming. We provide special pricing for TSA member families and have sponsored the annual TSA Championship Swim Meet.

In 2012 and 2013 we donated products for the Cornucopia Cancer Support Group’s annual “A Chocolate Affair” event. This is Cornucopia’s largest fund raising event each year and all money raised is used to continue with the cancer support programs that they offer for people with cancer and their families throughout the year.
