Most people have heard of memory foam that’s used in mattresses these days. However, many people don’t know that memory foam is made with harsh chemicals and releases toxins into your bedroom that can make you sick. Conversely, natural latex provides plenty of support and comfort and doesn’t contain ANY chemicals.
What are the main differences between natural latex and memory foam?

Watch this video on how you sleep affects the mattress firmness you should select.
Through the years, doctors’ recommendations about how firm a mattress should be have changed. In recent years, doctors have increasingly recommended a firm mattress, but is a firm mattress the right choice for everyone? Believe it or not, a firm mattress is not good for everybody, because we’re all different. When selecting the firmness of a mattress, one should consider body type, desired comfort, and more importantly how you sleep. By taking into consideration how you sleep (on your side, back, or stomach) when you select a new mattress can help you avoid unnecessary discomfort with your new purchase.
When you sleep on your side, you are more prone to pain around your pressure points, and it’s much easier for your spine to become misaligned over the course of the night. Because of this, we recommend a plush or medium-plush mattress for side sleepers. With a plush mattress, or a firmer mattress with a plush topper, your pressure points are able to sink into the mattress, helping keep the spine in line and relieving common aches and pains.
If you select a mattress that is too firm, you could experience more pain in common pressure points, such as your hips and shoulders. Your back could also hurt from becoming misaligned. On the bright side, a firmer mattress can be made softer just by adding a topper.
Most mattress reviewers and manufacturers use a firmness scale of 1-10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. While you should remain on the softer side of the scale, most people will recommend that side sleepers stay within the range of 3-6 in terms of firmness.
Sleeping on your back is the healthiest, most natural way for your body to get rest. The spine is more easily aligned in this position, and pressure points will not be as much of an issue. If you deviate from your body’s ideal support and comfort, it can wreak havoc on your body. Because of this, back sleepers should consider a medium to medium-firm mattress to achieve maximum comfort over the course of the night.
If you find yourself going for a mattress that’s too soft or too firm, you could be setting your spine up for misalignment. This can lead to aches and pains throughout the day that will worsen over time.
On the 1-10 firmness scale, it is recommended that back sleepers select a mattress on the 5-7 range of the scale. But don’t sacrifice comfort for firmness; if the mattress doesn’t feel comfortable that’s going to lead to many nights of bad sleep.
While sleeping on your stomach is not recommended for most people, some still find it to be the most comfortable position throughout the night. Stomach sleepers are at risk of having their spine become misaligned at night, especially in the lower back. When you sleep on your stomach, your lumbar can sink too much or remain too high. Either of these situations can cause shooting pain in the lower back and aches throughout your body. Because of this, it is recommended that stomach sleepers choose a medium-firm to firm mattress.
The typical recommendation for stomach sleepers is to stay within the 6-8 range on the firmness scale, though going down to a 5 is ok, if needed. It’s more important for stomach sleepers to let a mattress sales associate know their sleep style when selecting a new mattress, given that stomach sleeping is less common than sleeping on one’s side or back.
While this guide provides recommended firmnesses for 3 different sleep styles, the actual mattress firmness you choose will be influenced by your personal preferences. When you visit a mattress showroom, be sure to tell your associate your preferences AND your typical sleep style so they can help find the best fit for you. If you have questions about mattress firmness or would like a recommendation, contact The Organic Bedroom in Raleigh, NC. The friendly staff at The Organic Bedroom loves helping individuals find the right mattress as well as achieve the healthiest sleep of their lives.

We spend close to a third of our lives in bed. When we sleep, it’s a time for our bodies to rest and rejuvenate. To ensure we get the most out of our sleep, our beds should be comfortable, supportive, and free of harsh chemicals. Although many of us have become aware of harmful chemicals in our food, most people are unaware of the chemicals that linger in our homes and even in our mattresses.
Most mattresses contain some combination of polyurethane foam (often called memory foam), chemical flame retardants, formaldehyde, stain blockers, and other materials made from harsh chemicals linked to illnesses like respiratory disease and cancer. For example, polyurethane foam is made from petroleum and can emit volatile organic compounds (also known as VOC’s). When these VOC’s are released from mattresses into our homes (called “off gassing”), not only do they leave an offensive smell, but they harm our bodies when we breathe in these chemicals especially when we sleep. Similarly, chemical flame retardants seep into our bodies and the bodies of our children when we sleep – these chemicals have been detected in our blood and found in breast milk.
At The Organic Bedroom in Raleigh, you will find a wide selection of mattresses and bedding made from natural materials such as cotton, wool and natural latex. Mattresses made from natural materials have natural benefits. For example, the wool used in mattresses has many benefits – it helps regulate temperature for those of us that “sleep hot”, wick away moisture, defend against allergens like dust mites, and acts as a natural fire barrier (which removes the need for toxic flame retardants).
In addition to mattresses free of toxic chemicals for adults, The Organic Bedroom carries youth and crib mattresses and a wide selection of natural bedding like sheets, comforters, toppers, pillows, and much more. We understand that mattress shopping can be both confusing and frustrating. When you visit our store, we’ll take the time to tell you about our mattresses, show you the materials used to make them, and help you find a healthy mattress that meets your needs for both support and comfort.

Well it’s that time of year again and WOW did the year fly by! Now the fun is about to begin. It’s time to battle the traffic at the malls, fight for parking spaces and stand in long checkout lines with other frustrated shoppers. All of this time, energy and effort going into finding just the right gifts for your loved ones but what about you? Have you thought about what you would like? Do you even remember last Christmas? In all the hectic activities and running around it is easy to forget that you deserve a nice gift for all you do. What better time to think about rest and how it impacts your every day life when you are smack dab in the middle of the busiest time of the year.
We have experienced several Christmas seasons and we are finding that this is the perfect time of year to consider your mattress and all it does for you. The daylight hours are shorter, it’s cold outside, the kids are busy with activities and the holiday season is in full swing. This is the best time of your to really appreciate all your mattress does for you. Who needs new kitchen gadgets, electronic equipment that is outdated in 3 months or decorative ceramic elephants? Nobody! Who needs sleep? You do!
Imagine what it would be like to climb into bed after a very busy day and know your mattress is providing you with the most perfect sleep surface. Imagine not breathing in chemical flame retardants and sleeping on all natural materials that are designed to provide the greatest support. Imagine the feeling of your body feeling insulated but not overheating. This is what you can experience every night on a mattress made with organic and natural materials.
And don’t forget the kids. A mattress may not seem as exciting as the latest electronic gadgets but it is a gift that will not go unused like so many others. It is also a gift that will be remembered from one year to the next, especially for the little ones who are moving into their ‘big kid’ bed and how cool is it that Santa helped with the transition.
So make this the year to purchase the gift that keeps on giving. Bring in the whole family to see how a new mattress can be the ‘cool” gift. We are open 7 days a week and we offer before and after appointments if you would like a personal appointment. Call, stop in or drop us a note at email@example.com. We’re here to help.
