If you wake up congested, itchy, or sneezing, your bedding might be the problem. Dust mites, mold, synthetic chemicals, and allergens trapped in conventional bedding can trigger allergies and asthma. Switching to organic, natural bedding can make a significant difference.
Organic cotton sheets are essential. Conventional cotton is grown with heavy pesticide use, and those residues can linger in the fabric even after washing. Organic cotton (GOTS-certified) is grown without synthetic pesticides and processed without harsh chemicals or dyes. It's softer, more breathable, and won't irritate sensitive skin. Choose cotton sheets with a percale weave for maximum breathability - it's cooler and crisper than sateen. Sateen sheets will feel smoother & softer than Percale.
Wool bedding is a secret weapon for allergy sufferers. Wool naturally resists dust mites, mold, and mildew. It wicks moisture away from your body (which reduces the damp environment dust mites love), and it's hypoallergenic. Wool comforters, mattress toppers, and pillows are excellent for people with allergies. Despite the misconception, wool doesn't make you sleep hot. Wool naturally helps regulate your body temperature and keeps you comfortable year-round.
Natural latex pillows are also great for allergies. Latex is naturally resistant to dust mites and mold, and it doesn't break down into particles the way synthetic foam does. Shredded latex pillows allow for airflow and are adjustable for comfort.
Mattress and pillow protectors are critical. Even with organic bedding, you need a breathable, washable protector to keep allergens out of your mattress and pillows. Look for organic cotton or wool protectors and AVOID vinyl or polyurethane, which trap moisture and heat.
Finally, wash your bedding regularly in to keep them clean and help kill dust mites. Organic bedding can handle frequent washing without breaking down - just pay attention to the washing & drying instructions to get the most out of your bedding components.
At The Organic Bedroom, we carry a wide selection of organic sheets, wool comforters, natural latex and wool pillows, and breathable protectors. The bedding products we offer are designed to reduce allergens and improve your sleep.

Mattress warranties cover manufacturing defects like broken coils and deep sagging, but normal softening, stains, and comfort changes aren't covered. Understanding what's actually protected (and what voids your warranty) helps you avoid expensive surprises.

Ensuring that your mattress has proper support is just as important as the mattress itself. The right support system extends your mattress's lifespan, maintains proper support, and can even affect your warranty coverage. Old school box springs were designed for innerspring mattresses but will likely change the feel for most mattresses made today. Foundations and platform beds both work well for natural mattresses - but only if the slats are built right: at least 2 inches wide, no more than 3 inches apart, and rigid (not flexible).

Hemp sheets are made from fibers of the hemp plant, which grows quickly, requires minimal water, and doesn't need pesticides. From a sustainability standpoint, hemp is one of the cleanest crops you can grow. As for sleeping on them? Hemp sheets are durable, breathable, and get softer with every wash. They feel similar to linen - a bit textured and crisp at first, but they break in over time and develop a lived-in softness without pilling.
