Mattress Warranties: What They Cover (And What They Don't)

Most mattress warranties cover manufacturing defects like broken coils, splitting foam, or defective construction. The big claim is indentation depth: if your mattress develops a sag deeper than 1.5 inches, it may be covered. But here's the catch - normal softening, comfort preference changes, or minor sagging that doesn't hit the threshold isn't covered. Many warranties also go "prorated" after an initial period, meaning the value of your warranty decreases each year in the prorated portion of the warranty.

What warranties don't cover is often surprising: stains of any kind (even if they don't affect function), damage from improper foundations, comfort changes, physical damage, or even removing the law tag. Many warranties become void without a mattress protector or proper support. This matters especially for many mattress brands, which have specific foundation requirements you need to follow.

Better manufacturers offer better warranties because they use better materials. Mattresses made with natural materials (like wool and natural latex) often come with 15-20 year warranties because the materials don't break down like memory foam. The Hypnos and Whitney Natural brands back their craftsmanship with substantial warranties (20 years and 15 years, respectively) because they're confident in their materials.  Ultimately, the best warranty is one you never need - buy quality, use the right foundation, protect it, and follow care instructions.
