What’s the Difference Between All-Natural Latex and Memory Foam?

The-Organic-Bedroom-FAQ
Memory foam is derived from petroleum-based chemicals while all-natural Latex is derived from Nature. Memory foam mattresses are known for off-gassing as well as retaining heat. Even so called bio-based and soy based foams are still primarily petroleum based.

All-natural Latex is harvested from trees similar to tapping sap for maple syrup.  All-natural latex does not retain heat and provides a high level of pressure relief from its bounce back effect. Both provide excellent motion transfer properties.

Is all Latex the same?

Absolutely not! Most latex mattresses today contain a percentage of actual natural ingredients that are blended with synthetic materials. Those synthetic materials include many of the same chemicals that are found in memory foam. Theses materials can produce the same off gassing effects as memory foam. The Organic Bedroom carries only All-Natural Latex that is the purest available.

What is the difference between Dunlop and Talalay Latex?

Dunlop Latex is the older and more traditional way of processing latex. The tree is tapped, the sap is vulcanized, then moved to a large machine for the baking process. The output is heavy latex layers that can be used as both the core and comfort layers for All-Natural latex mattresses.

Talalay Latex uses the same sap from the rubber tree, but prior to baking, the vulcanized sap is vacuum-sealed and the air is sucked out. The material is then frozen and baked. This process is more computer intensive and requires more resources.

In both processes the finished product is washed and rinsed several times in sterile water before it is ready for shipment. The Latex rubber that is used in most of the mattresses that The Organic Bedroom carries are grown in Asian Countries.

Why is there wool in Natural and Organic mattresses?

Wool has many health benefits. Wool regulates your body by insulating it. When your body temperature goes up (as it will while you are sleeping), wool will wick any moisture, keeping your body cool and comfortable. In cooler temperatures, wool is warm and cozy.  Wool will continue to warm you up and cool you down, helping to maintain your body at the perfect temperature throughout the night.  This is the reason that winter weather athletes use wool to layer.

Wool also contains a natural oil called Lanolin.  Lanolin is a natural defender from dust mites and other known allergens.

Wool is a natural fire barrier, so it is used to pass flame testing without having to add other harmful or toxic chemicals to meet government safety standards.

Do your mattresses contain flame retardants?

NO! All mattresses that are manufactured to be sold in the United States must pass a flame test for fire resistance before they can be put in retail stores. The mattresses that we carry use only natural materials to achieve this.  Wool is naturally flame resistance and, when enough wool is used in the cover of the mattresses, the mattress will pass all flame testing requirements without additional harsh and toxic chemicals. Anyone only selling prescription mattresses that does not pass the federal flammability requirements and require a doctors note is not being honest so they can sell you a lower quality product.

I sleep hot! What is the best mattress for me?

For people who sleep hot (most people), we generally recommend any of our mattresses that contain wool in cover. Wool is a superior material for regulating body temperature and it offers many other great health benefits.  Many people come to us thinking that the wool is like those old itchy sweaters that grandma used to make for you but the carded wool is very soft and included inside our cotton covers.

Every time my partner moves at night it wakes me up. Do your mattresses reduce motion transfer?

Yes. Latex and pocketed coil innerspring mattresses create individual zones that virtually eliminate motion from transferring when your partner moves. Many of our mattresses have a nice stretch knit cotton cover, which further eliminates even the slightest movement.

Are your mattresses good for people with allergies?

Traditional mattresses are made with synthetically produced materials. The mattresses that we carry contain no polyurethane foams, no chemical flame-retardant materials and no other chemical fabric treatments. Most of our mattresses do contain wool, which is a natural protector from many allergens including dust mites.

Today, memory foam can be found in almost every traditional mattress.  Memory foam is petrochemical based and even products marketed as soy based or “bio” based still typically contain 80% or more of the petrochemical base. Even innerspring mattresses are commonly topped with layers of polyurethane foams, covers made from synthetic fabrics and chemical flame retardants and added stain blockers.  All of these synthetic materials and chemicals can be very hard for most people to tolerate, but those who suffer from allergies can feel even worse after spending time on and around new traditional mattresses.

What is an Organic Mattress?

This is a highly debatable question and the answer will depend on whom you ask.

If you ask the sales guru at the traditional big box mattress retailer, you may be shown what is referred to as a “100% bio-foam mattress”.  These so-called bio-foam or soy foam mattresses are technically all-natural and in some cases even called “organic”.  These mattresses will have a polyester blend cover that may or may not contain some organic cotton. You may even be shown a mattress made with bamboo and being sold is an all-natural bamboo mattress. Bamboo is not certified organic.

We try to stay away from all the marketing gimmicks and games that are so prevalent with many of our peers in the mattress retail industry.  We actually show you what is in the mattresses we carry.  We show you the actual components, we explain which organization certified each component and we discuss the differences between certified, natural and synthetic materials.

We carry mattresses that 100% certified meaning the cotton, wool, and Dunlop Latex are all certified organic. We also carry mattresses that are not certified organic, but are made with natural materials.  It is important to us that we have a variety of mattresses made with both innerspring and latex cores that appeal to different lifestyles and desires.  We don’t and will not in the future, offer soy based “magic” foam, wonderful cooling gel infused memory foam or any mattress that contains toxic flame retardants or other harmful chemicals. We don’t spend a lot of time “selling”.  We spend time educating.

Are Organic and Natural Mattresses expensive?

Yes and no. We carry a couple king size mattress and foundation sets that retails for over $10,000. For many people, that is a lot of money. For others, it might be a lot of money, but worth it because they understand the importance of sleep and how it impacts every aspect of their life.  The other side to this is that these mattresses are INCREDIBLE!  They feel great, they are very high quality and the attention to detail is amazing.

On the flip side, we have developed our own private label Whitney brand and within that line of mattresses, we have a twin size mattress that retails for $599.  Of course we also have all sorts of options in between.

After several years of experience we’ve found just the right mix of products to help everyone, regardless of budget to “sleep healthy” every night.  We don’t think children, teens or adults should spend 1/3 of their lives on anything that could impair their health.  Our most popular mattresses are typically on the higher end of the price range of the mid-priced traditional mattresses in the standard mattress retail stores.  But with the slightly higher price comes a mattress that doesn’t have to be replaced in 8 years. In fact, our mattresses typically are delivered with a 20-year warranty. Latex is known for it’s durability and we have picked up latex mattresses that are over 20-30 years old.

So you do the math.  You purchase a mattress that lasts 20 or more years and you don’t have to read through boring FAQs about mattresses for at least 20 years.  That in itself is a benefit.  Over the next 20 years, the average couple will spend around $20,000 on cell phone packages, $120,000 on vehicles and expenses and $40,000 on vacations.  How much is the place where you spend 1/3rd of your life worth to you?

I hate mattress shopping, what is it like at The Organic Bedroom?

Fun!!!

We opened The Organic Bedroom because we didn’t like how mattresses are sold.  We didn’t like the games, we didn’t like the products and the salespeople are pushy. We are just regular people who had regular jobs and decided to take a dive into entrepreneurship.  We built our business on respecting our customers, making the shopping experience fun for the whole family and being honest.  If you come in and you aren’t ready to buy a mattress, we won’t make you feel bad.  We’ll invite you to come back and will offer the same experience again.  Of course, we like when you make a purchase as it keeps the lights on.

We’ll spend as much time as you need to find exactly the best fit.  We’ll work within your budget and will not keep up-selling you.  We want you to be 100% confident in your purchase when you walk out the door.  We may even send you to one of those “other” mattress stores across the street just so you can see what you’re missing out on by buying a mattress without all those toxins.

We have a friendly, laid back environment.  We have a television with movie channels, we have free wi-fi and of course we have lots of beds if you just want to relax. We have great feedback from past customers who have found our store to be very inviting and some of our very young customers didn’t want to leave even after spending hours waiting for their parents to pick out just the right mattress.  Come in and see for yourself.
